What Is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D—also known as the Medicare prescription drug benefit—is a program that helps Medicare beneficiaries cover the cost of self-administered prescription medications. While drugs that are administered by a medical professional during a surgery or a hospital stay are generally covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B), prescription drugs that you receive from a pharmacy and administer yourself are generally not, and that’s where Medicare Part D comes in. However, Medicare Part D only pays for prescriptions that are deemed “medically necessary,” so not all drugs will be covered. For instance, Medicare Part D usually doesn’t cover medications used for erectile dysfunction, fertility, weight loss or weight gain, cosmetic purposes, or any drug that hasn’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
